No Time For Retrospect! Hit the Dock Running

After leaving Meldrum Bay, we had a pretty slow downwind sail to Drummond Island. About half way through the day, it began to rain. It wasn't that pleasant warm summer rain that we had grown accustom to though. This was one of the cold, seemingly horizontal rains that penetrates any layer of clothing and goes straight to the bone.
Once on Drummond Island, we had the most fortunate thing happened. After clearing customs, we asked the harbor master about where we could get some groceries. It just so happened that we could rent a car (not questions asked) for $12. I took that offer, and we had a great evening joy ride around the Island. It felt strange to drive, but I couldn't complain, I wasn't paying for gas. We got up before sunrise and sailed just North to Harbor island where we took a quick nap, ate breakfast, and took a quick dip.

We then began our trip to Larry and Sharon's house on the St. Mary's river. We sailed the entire way there. I think that this really symbolized our maturity and confidence in our skill. It really didn't seem like a big deal while doing it, but when I think back to earlier in the summer when we were entering Lake Huron, we would never have imagined raising our sails so close to ore boats.

We arrived at our destination and Larry came out with to pick us up. We have a great evening and morning and then heading still farther en route to Sault Sainte, Marie. There was a very strong NW wind which made the stretch both aggravating and time consuming. But we made it. We spent the night and left for White Fish Point.

It was a pleasant motor/sail day to White Fish Point. When we arrived, there was only one other sailboat docked. They turned out to be a couple from Holland who were circumnavigating the earth. They had been on there 35' boat for over a year already. You can check them out on their blog at: http://tarpan.waarbenjij.nu/Reisverslag/?tarpan/Canada/zoetwatermatrozen+op+de+liggende+mastroute/&subdomain=tarpan&module=site&page=message&id=3935079 (But you'll need to translate it!).

That night the weather really picked up and we both decided to rest for a day and let the front pass over. I did a bit of fishing, but only caught one. The next morning both boats sailed all the way to Grand Marais. The waves were so big Megan and I were both very apprehensive to leave, but eventually decided to take a chance. We ended up having such a great day. We never had to turn on our engine from the moment we left the dock to the following morning when we left Grand Marais. It was glorious. Now, onto Grand Island near Munising: the last stop before we're home!
